Synopsis

Henrik Bergman has almost no money and a theology degree nearly in hand when he meets Anna, the daughter of a prosperous Uppsala family. The match looks impossible on paper; they push through anyway. Henrik takes a parish in the far north of Sweden, and what Anna first accepts as a romantic exile gradually closes in around her. Two people with entirely different ideas of what a good life looks like, sharing one house, one bed, and very little else they agree on.
Directed by Bille August, who had already taken the Palme d'Or at Cannes for Pelle the Conqueror, this film claimed the same prize in 1992 — the only time he won it twice.
