Synopsis
The Chinese Widow (烽火芳菲, 2017) is a Chinese wartime drama directed by Bille August — stream it online on iFILM. It is 1942, weeks after American bombers struck Tokyo in the Doolittle Raid. Pilot Jack Turner (Emile Hirsch) bails out over Japanese-occupied China and barely makes it to the ground alive. A young rural widow named Ying (Crystal Liu) finds him — and decides to hide him, knowing full well what the Japanese do to villages that shelter the enemy.
The two cannot share a language. They share a farmhouse, danger and the slow erosion of every assumption they brought with them. The film is not interested in battlefield heroics; its tension lives in quiet rooms, narrow escapes and two people working out whether trust across a wartime divide is even possible.
Danish director Bille August — twice a Palme d'Or winner at Cannes — helmed this Chinese co-production with an eye for intimate drama inside large-scale conflict. It works best for viewers who want the human cost of war rather than the spectacle of it. Watch The Chinese Widow (2017) online on iFILM.
