Synopsis
The Leopard Man (1943) is a classic noir-horror you can watch online on iFILM, and a masterclass in suspense that never once shows its killer head-on. Jacques Tourneur runs the whole thing in 66 minutes. A small New Mexico town. A promoter named Jerry rents a live black leopard for dancer Kiki's nightclub act, and the animal bolts during the show.
Soon young women start turning up dead. Everyone blames the escaped cat at first. But the wounds look too deliberate for an animal, and Jerry and Kiki begin to suspect a human hand behind the killings. The structure is unusual: scenes drift from one character to the next, strangers linked by nothing but the same haunted town.
Tourneur and producer Val Lewton built their scares from shadow, sound and the thing just out of frame rather than gore. Forties critics grumbled that the plot fell apart, and Tourneur himself shrugged it off as a string of vignettes. Watched now, that fractured shape feels bolder than most of what its era produced. One for fans of old horror where the unseen does the damage. Stream The Leopard Man (1943) online on iFILM.
