Synopsis
Night of the Demon (1957) is a British supernatural horror film directed by Jacques Tourneur, available to watch online on iFILM. American psychologist John Holden arrives in London for a parapsychology conference and finds that his colleague — the one who was investigating a Satanic cult — died the day before in a freak accident. Or what looks like one.
Dana Andrews plays Holden as a committed rationalist who refuses to accept that any of it is real, which makes him exactly the wrong person to be dealing with Dr. Julian Karswell. Niall MacGinnis' Karswell is the kind of villain who doesn't threaten you — he's polite, learned, and mildly amused. The character was reportedly modelled on occultist Aleister Crowley, and MacGinnis makes that lineage plausible.
Tourneur built his reputation on Val Lewton's horror productions at RKO, and the same instinct runs through this: dread that lives in the margins, not the centre. Whether the curse is real or Holden is cracking is a question the film holds open longer than most would dare. Watch Night of the Demon (1957) online on iFILM.
