Synopsis
India Song (1975) is Marguerite Duras's hypnotic drama, one to watch online on iFILM if slow, trance-like cinema is your thing. Anne-Marie Stretter, wife of a French ambassador in 1930s India, takes lover after lover — not out of desire, but to survive the suffocating boredom of colonial life.
Duras abandons almost everything we expect from storytelling. Off-screen voices remember, whisper and argue about the characters while those same figures drift silently through dim embassy rooms. Delphine Seyrig plays Anne-Marie as a woman burned hollow behind the glamour of receptions. Michael Lonsdale is the vice-consul whose obsession erupts in a single scream that cuts across the whole film. Sound and image live apart here, and the gap between them is where the ache comes from.
This is not a film to keep on in the background. A novelist as much as a director, Duras turned her own prose into pure atmosphere: heat, monsoon, an empire rotting, love as a slow death. It remains a touchstone for anyone ready for radically personal cinema. Stream India Song (1975) online on iFILM.
