Synopsis
Zatoichi on the Road (座頭市喧嘩旅, 1963) is the fifth Zatoichi film — watch it online on iFILM. Director Kimiyoshi Yasuda keeps the premise simple: a dying man asks Katsu Shintarō's blind swordsman to escort his daughter Omitsu safely to her family in Edo. Zatoichi agrees. Multiple criminal factions immediately want her for ransom.
The film is the most relentlessly paced of the early series. Yasuda runs several gang factions on intersecting paths, keeps the action moving, and doesn't stop for much introspection. Zatoichi ends up fighting them all in succession — and then all at once.
Fujimura Shihō plays Omitsu as someone capable of handling herself, within limits. The dynamic between the two of them keeps the escort plot from feeling mechanical. Watch Zatoichi on the Road online on iFILM.
