Synopsis
"Any Number Can Win" (Mélodie en sous-sol, 1963) is a French crime film — watch it online on iFILM. Director Henri Verneuil brought together Jean Gabin as the veteran thief Charles and a young Alain Delon as his partner Francis. Charles has just walked out of prison and wasted no time: quiet domesticity holds no appeal, and one last heist already has his full attention.
The target is the casino vault in Cannes. Charles has worked out every detail with the patience of a man who has made and lost fortunes before. Francis is young, eager, and visibly straining to prove he belongs in the same room. The plan looks airtight. That should have been the first warning.
Verneuil made something closer to a slow-burning character study than a caper — two professionals, two very different readings of what confidence actually costs. Gabin carries the weight of someone who still believes one clean score can settle everything. Delon is the opposite: sharp, impatient, and not yet old enough to know that certainty is dangerous.
