Synopsis
Beaumarchais the Scoundrel (Beaumarchais, l'insolent, 1996) is a French historical adventure you can watch online on iFILM. Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais wrote The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro, bankrolled arms shipments to American colonists during the War of Independence, ran spy operations for Louis XVI, and still found time to pick fights with princes. Fabrice Luchini plays him as a man who never quite knows when to stop — which is his essential quality, comic and dangerous at once.
The plot kicks off when Beaumarchais challenges the powerful Prince de Conti, loses a court case that strips him of all noble privileges, and receives a very targeted pardon offer from the king. Director Édouard Molinaro keeps the tone closer to a comic picaresque than a ceremonial period piece — Michel Serrault, Jacques Weber, and Michel Piccoli fill out a cast that makes eighteenth-century intrigue feel pleasingly chaotic.
