Synopsis
The Day I Saw Your Heart (Et soudain, tout le monde me manque, 2011) is a French dramedy by Jennifer Devoldère that you can watch online on iFILM. Eli is sixty, anxious by nature, and his much younger second wife is expecting a baby. Breaking that news to his two grown daughters scares him almost more than becoming a father again at his age.
The film leans on the younger one, Justine. She runs from any kind of commitment, plays old Bowie covers on repeat, and sneaks onto her employer's MRI machine to turn the scans into X-ray art. Just when she thinks she's found The One — a charming shoe salesman — her father's announcement knocks her off balance. Her half-sister Dom, meanwhile, is quietly failing to adopt. Old grievances, a dad who was barely around, and the fear of repeating his mistakes all surface at once.
Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) plays Justine with a light, prickly touch, while comedy veteran Michel Blanc turns the flustered father into someone clumsy, real and oddly moving. It's a small, charming, thoroughly Parisian picture about how you don't get to choose your family but can't manage without it either.
