Synopsis
Damnation (Kárhozat, 1988) is a black-and-white crime drama from Hungarian director Béla Tarr that you can watch online on iFILM. Karrer drifts through a rain-soaked mining town, fixated on a married woman who sings at the Titanik bar.
To get her alone, Karrer hands her husband a shady smuggling job — anything to send the man out of town for a couple of days. The scheme is petty, the betrayal quiet, and it curdles in ways Karrer never plans for. Plot is almost beside the point. What stays with you is the texture: peeling walls, stray dogs, and rain that seems to have been falling since the beginning of time.
This is the film where Tarr's signature took shape — gliding long takes, empty courtyards, time stretched until you feel its weight; seven years later he would push the same language into the seven-hour Sátántangó. He co-wrote the script with novelist László Krasznahorkai, with a score by Mihály Víg. If slow, contemplative cinema is your thing, Damnation rewards the patience; if you want crime-genre momentum, look elsewhere. Stream Damnation (1988) online on iFILM.
