Hezekiah and Alec, two friends newly arrived from Jamaica, are pulled into the criminal underbelly of the East End and quickly cross Sugar Goodson, the boxer who runs the local fight scene. Their path tangles with Mary Carr, queen of the Forty Elephants — an all-female crew of thieves working over London's grand shops. Boxing ring, prison cell and high-society drawing room collide.

The series comes from Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, and his fingerprints are all over it: real late-Victorian figures, grime and ambition in place of costume-drama polish.
