Synopsis
The Promise (无极, 2005) is a Chinese fantasy epic from director Chen Kaige that you can watch online on iFILM. As a starving child, a girl strikes a bargain with a goddess of fate: she will have beauty and the love of every man, but she can never keep the one she truly loves. The curse breaks only on the impossible — snow in spring and the dead walking again.
The girl grows into Princess Qingcheng, and the bill comes due. A slave who can outrun the wind, a fearless general and a scheming duke all circle her, and every man who reaches her is marked for ruin. The plot loops through palace intrigue, chases and duels where honor, destiny and love keep fighting over who gets the last word. This isn't realism; it's a deliberately stylized fable about the price of a promise.
Chen Kaige, who made Farewell My Concubine, poured a then-record budget for Chinese cinema into the film, hence the ornate costumes, mid-air combat and riot of CGI color. The cast is pan-Asian: Cecilia Cheung, Korea's Jang Dong-gun, Japan's Hiroyuki Sanada, Liu Ye and Nicholas Tse. It splits viewers hard — some mock the effects overload, others love it for exactly that brazen, like-nothing-else visual imagination. Stream The Promise online on iFILM.
