Synopsis
Farewell My Concubine (霸王别姬, 1993) is Chen Kaige's historical drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Half a century of Chinese history unfolds through two Peking opera performers whose childhood bond curdles, across the decades, into something far more painful and unspoken.
The boys are handed over to a brutal opera academy, where skill is literally beaten into them. Douzi grows up to play the concubine Yu, Xiaolou the mighty King of Chu, and onstage the pair are inseparable. Off it, Douzi can no longer tell the role from his own heart, and his devotion to his partner spills past anything the play allows. When Xiaolou brings home the courtesan Juxian, the old alliance begins to fracture. Outside the theater, whole eras collapse — the Japanese occupation, the Communist takeover, the frenzy of the Cultural Revolution that forces former idols to denounce one another.
Adapted from Lilian Lee's novel, the film stars Leslie Cheung, Zhang Fengyi and Gong Li. It took the Palme d'Or at Cannes — still the only Chinese film to win it — and earned an Oscar nomination. Three hours that hold you not through plot but through the way total artistic surrender becomes private ruin. For anyone craving big, grown-up cinema about love, betrayal and the cost of art, it earns every minute. Stream Farewell My Concubine (1993) online on iFILM.
