Synopsis
Moon Over Parador (1988) is a political comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Richard Dreyfuss plays a second-string New York actor who lands the role of his career in the unlikeliest place: a banana-republic dictatorship that needs a leading man.
Jack Noah is shooting a small film in the tiny nation of Parador when its strongman drops dead right before an election. Secret-police chief Roberto Strausmann spots the resemblance and hands Jack an offer with no exit — impersonate the late president, or never leave the country alive. What starts as survival theater slowly goes to Jack's head. He hands out promises, falls for the dictator's mistress Madonna, and turns a coerced performance into something that looks alarmingly like real rule.
Director Paul Mazursky builds a sharp little satire about politics as stagecraft, where the makeup matters more than the platform. Raúl Juliá is gleefully menacing as Strausmann, and Sonia Braga gives Dreyfuss someone to push against. Watch for Jonathan Winters and Sammy Davis Jr. piling on the absurdity.
