Synopsis
Shock Corridor (1963) is a black-and-white crime thriller from director Samuel Fuller you can watch online on iFILM. Peter Breck plays Johnny Barrett, a journalist so hungry for a Pulitzer Prize he agrees to fake mental illness and get himself committed to a psychiatric hospital where a murder was never solved.
The only three witnesses are patients too far gone to testify coherently. Johnny befriends them one by one, each a walking allegory — a Korean War veteran who believes he's a Confederate general, a Black student broken by the violence he faced integrating a Southern university, and a nuclear physicist who regressed to childhood. His girlfriend Cathy warned him from the start that you don't spend time in that corridor without losing something. She turns out to be right.
Fuller made the film for around half a million dollars in 1963 and packed it with more political charge than the budget suggests — McCarthyism, racial tension, the nuclear age. It runs 102 minutes and still cuts. If you follow classic American noir or independent cinema of the 1960s, this one belongs on the list. Stream Shock Corridor (1963) online on iFILM.
