Synopsis

The Big Red One (1980) — Samuel Fuller's war drama you can watch online on iFILM — is the one Hollywood combat film built from the director's own memories of the front. Lee Marvin plays the Sergeant, a WWI survivor who has been doing this killing business so long it stopped being anything but a job.

He leads four men across North Africa, Sicily, Omaha Beach, Belgium, and into Germany. Griff (Mark Hamill), Zab (Robert Carradine), Vinci and Johnson are riflemen learning a single lesson: do not get attached to a new replacement because replacements die. Fuller strips the war film of its usual glory and replaces it with mud, attrition, and luck.

What makes it hit harder than most is that Fuller was actually there — enlisted, shot, decorated. The concentration camp sequence at the end lands because it comes from someone who saw what was inside. Stream The Big Red One (1980) on iFILM.
