Synopsis
Misha and the Wolves (2021) is Sam Hobkinson's documentary mystery, available to watch online on iFILM. It follows a woman whose Holocaust survival memoir conquered readers around the globe — until the whole thing began to unravel.
Misha Defonseca claimed that as a little girl she walked across war-torn Europe searching for her deported parents, surviving in the forests under the protection of a wolf pack. The book became a bestseller, Hollywood bought the rights, and Oprah came calling. Then her former publisher, nursing a grudge against the author she once championed, started checking every line. Thread by thread, a very different truth came loose.
Hobkinson stages the film as a real investigation, full of false turns that let the viewer believe, doubt and get fooled right alongside everyone else. The sharpest hook isn't the exposure itself but the question of why someone would spend years living inside a borrowed life. One for anyone who loves untangling a great hoax, in the vein of Inventing Anna. Stream Misha and the Wolves (2021) online on iFILM.
