Synopsis
Twin Sisters (De Tweeling, 2002) is a Dutch wartime drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Ben Sombogaart and based on Tessa de Loo's novel, the film begins in 1920s Germany as six-year-old twins Lotte and Anna are split apart after their parents die. Lotte goes to a middle-class Dutch aunt in the Netherlands; Anna is sent to work on a German uncle's farm.
The film follows them across decades without rushing. Lotte's Jewish fiancé is killed in a concentration camp. Anna marries an SS officer. Two sisters from the same crib end up standing on opposite sides of the twentieth century's worst rupture — not by choice, but by the accident of where they were sent at age six.
Fifty years later they meet at a resort. The Netherlands submitted this as its Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film, and the ending earns that attention — not because it resolves anything cleanly, but because it doesn't. Stream Twin Sisters online on iFILM.
