Spanish Movie

Spanish Movie (2009) is Javier Ruiz Caldera's spoof comedy you can watch online in good quality. Think of it as Spain's own answer to the "Scary Movie" formula, aimed squarely at the country's mid-2000s blockbusters — Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage, The Others and friends all get the elbow.

Plot is beside the point and proudly so. A pregnant woman moves into a gloomy mansion with her daughters, where ghosts, a faun, creepy nuns and assorted monsters lifted from a dozen films all show up at once. The gags arrive in a flood, sparing nobody who ever got a fright out of Spanish horror.

It plays best if you've actually seen the originals — half the laughs come from recognizing a shot, a scene or a theme tune. Caldera would later prove with Three Many Weddings that he can build a real comedy; here he's just goofing off. Eighty-odd minutes of unapologetic nonsense.
