Synopsis
Without Limits (1998) is a sports biography you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Robert Towne — the screenwriter behind Chinatown. Billy Crudup plays Steve Prefontaine, the Oregon distance runner who held every American record from the 2,000 to the 10,000 metres in the early 1970s, charging from the front of the pack in races where the smart play was to wait.
The film's spine is his relationship with coach Bill Bowerman, played by Donald Sutherland. Bowerman would later co-found Nike; here he functions as more of an aging philosopher than a strategist. A rival Prefontaine biopic appeared just a year earlier, but this version earns its 117 minutes by refusing to reduce a complicated man to a highlight reel. Watch Without Limits on iFILM.
