Synopsis
Eternity and a Day (1998) is a meditative drama from Greek master Theo Angelopoulos, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Aging writer Alexander (Bruno Ganz) learns he has little time left and sets out to spend what may be his final day saying goodbye to the world he knows.
Two things knock him off course: an old letter from his late wife recalling a single summer day thirty years past, and a young Albanian boy who has slipped across the border illegally. Alexander buys the child back from traffickers and drives with him through rain-soaked Thessaloniki. Past and present dissolve into each other without a seam — one moment he speaks with his long-dead wife on a sunlit shore, the next he stands again under a grey sky by the sea. Time doesn't run straight here; it folds back on itself.
Angelopoulos films in long, gliding takes set to Eleni Karaindrou's mournful score, the camera reluctant to let any moment go. The film took the Palme d'Or at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, the festival's top prize. This is slow, poetic cinema about memory and the time we have left; viewers willing to settle into its rhythm are rewarded with something rare. Stream Eternity and a Day online on iFILM.
