Synopsis
Rasputin: The Mad Monk (1966) is a Hammer horror you can watch online on iFILM. Christopher Lee plays the Siberian mystic whose hypnotic stare and brute will carry him from a rowdy provincial tavern straight to the court of the last Romanovs.
Director Don Sharp throws the history books out. His Rasputin heals with his bare hands, bends people with a glance, and works his way through the Tsarina's ladies-in-waiting until the empress herself falls under his spell. The film runs on the legend of the monk's psychic power rather than on real dates — and as his grip on state policy tightens, a circle of enemies starts plotting the only way left to be rid of him.
Lee carries the whole thing on charisma and that bottomless voice, with barely any makeup, in one of his most overlooked performances outside the Dracula cycle. Shot on the same sets as Hammer's Dracula: Prince of Darkness the same year, it keeps the studio's lush gothic look: red velvet, candlelight, blood.
