Synopsis
Czech director Jan Svěrák made The Elementary School (Obecná škola, 1991) his feature debut — a comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, set in a small Bohemian town in the spring of 1945.
Ten-year-old Eda's class is completely out of control. Their new teacher, Igor Hnidzo, is a self-proclaimed resistance fighter who arrives with a cane, vivid war stories, and the kind of charm that quiets boys and unsettles women in equal measure. He wins the classroom in a week. The women in town take longer to recover, and his weakness for them is what eventually threatens his job. The script came from Zdeněk Svěrák — Jan's father and a cast member here — the same partnership that later claimed the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for Kolya (1996). This earlier film earned them their first Oscar nomination. Stream The Elementary School online on iFILM.
