Synopsis
La Belle Noiseuse (1991) is Jacques Rivette's four-hour French drama, available to watch online on iFILM. The aging painter Frenhofer hasn't touched a brush in years. He has settled into the Provence countryside with his wife, leaving the great canvas of his life unfinished.
A young artist named Nicolas arrives with his girlfriend Marianne. One look at her, and the abandoned painting starts demanding to be completed. Marianne agrees to sit, and most of the film unfolds inside the studio: charcoal scraping paper, held poses, silence, the act of looking. The camera refuses to glance away from an image being born. A taut, invisible wire stretches between the painter, his model, his wife and her boyfriend, and every session exposes far more than skin. Michel Piccoli plays obsession without raising his voice, Emmanuelle Béart gives the role her whole body and nerve, and Jane Birkin holds the quiet jealousy of a woman who once posed in that same chair.
Rivette made a rare film about the craft itself — what an artist takes from the person being painted. It claimed the Grand Prix at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. For viewers ready to trade plot jolts for a slow, hypnotic rhythm, this offers something cinema almost never does. Stream La Belle Noiseuse (1991) online on iFILM.
