Subspecies

Subspecies (1991) is a cult vampire horror from Ted Nicolaou that you can watch online on iFILM. Three students arrive in the Transylvanian backcountry to study folklore and walk straight into a feud between two vampire brothers.

The older one, Radu, is a rotting creature with long bone fingers, hungry for an ancient relic and the family castle's throne. The younger still remembers being human and sides with the women. Night after night the trap tightens — blood, crypts, a ruined village in the shadow of a medieval keep.

They shot it on location in Romania, in real castles and ruins, which gives it a damp, genuine gloom Hollywood vampires of the era never had. Anders Hove made Radu one of low-budget horror's nastiest fiends, and Full Moon stretched the success into four sequels. An easy call for anyone who likes old horror with practical effects over CGI.
