Synopsis
Iris (2014) is a documentary by Albert Maysles, available to watch online on iFILM. Its subject is Iris Apfel, the 93-year-old New York style icon known for oversized round glasses and fearless excess.
The camera trails her across Manhattan — flea markets, boutiques, the storerooms stuffed with her outfits and mountains of costume jewelry. Iris haggles over a bracelet as fiercely as she critiques a shop window. Beside her is Carl, her husband since 1948, and their bickering is tender and funny. "It's a lot more important to be happy than well dressed," says a woman who'd know.
This is one of the last films by Maysles, a giant of American documentary (Grey Gardens, Gimme Shelter), who died at 88 not long after filming. It isn't really about clothes — it's about taste, curiosity and refusing to be bored at any age. A treat for anyone who loves vivid people and fashion as a way of living.
