Synopsis
Salesman (1969) is the landmark documentary by Albert and David Maysles with Charlotte Zwerin, and you can watch it online on iFILM. For four months the camera rides shotgun with four door-to-door men who hawk expensive illustrated Bibles across small-town America.
At the center is Paul Brennan, "The Badger." He used to talk anyone into anything; now the pitch lands flat, the numbers slip, and the bosses lean harder. His rivals on the road — "The Rabbit," "The Bull," "The Gipper" — share the same cheap motels and the same memorized script, knocking on doors of working-class families in New England and Florida who can barely justify a fifty-dollar Bible.
The Maysles ask nothing and explain nothing. They just watch, and out of that silence comes a quietly devastating portrait of the American dream running out of road. A cornerstone of direct cinema that reshaped how documentaries get made. Spare, gripping, essential for anyone who loves unstaged film.
