Leto

Leto (2018), also titled Summer, is a music drama from director Kirill Serebrennikov you can watch online on iFILM. Leningrad, early eighties: a smuggled-vinyl rock underground simmers, and a young Viktor Tsoi is about to start the band Kino.

The film circles a tender triangle — Tsoi, established rocker Mike Naumenko, and Mike's wife Natasha. Mike is already a fixture of the Leningrad Rock Club; Viktor is an unknown kid with a guitar, and the older musician takes him in. Korean actor Teo Yoo plays Tsoi, Roma Zver plays Mike, and Irina Starshenbaum is Natasha. Kitchen-table arguments, half-spoken love, and songs that feel like a fuse burning down.

Serebrennikov made Leto while under house arrest; he finished it remotely and missed its Cannes premiere for the same reason. The black-and-white frames keep bursting into hand-drawn music videos set to Talking Heads and Iggy Pop.
