Synopsis
La Llorona (2019) is a Guatemalan horror film with a political pulse, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Director Jayro Bustamante takes the folk tale of the Weeping Woman and drives it straight into a national wound: the trial of a general whose army erased entire Maya Ixil villages.
The aging dictator, Enrique, is found guilty, but his sentence stalls on appeal and he seals himself inside his mansion with his wife, daughter and granddaughter. Beyond the gates, a crowd refuses to leave — not at noon, not at midnight. Every servant quits except the old housekeeper, who brings in a quiet young woman from her village, Alma (María Mercedes Coroy). A chill follows her through the rooms. Someone weeps after dark, the general hears voices, and his own family starts to see what he spent decades refusing to name.
Bustamante barely reaches for jump scares; the dread grows out of guilt and everything left unsaid. He shot the film only a few years after the real Ríos Montt proceedings, and here the victims of the killings come back not as an idea but as a presence in the walls. It collected festival prizes and landed on year-end shortlists as one of the decade's sharpest horror statements. If slow, suffocating fear speaks to you more than a ride, stream La Llorona (2019) online on iFILM.
