Synopsis
Ixcanul (2015) is a Guatemalan drama by Jayro Bustamante you can watch online on iFILM. María, seventeen and Kaqchikel Maya, lives with her parents on a coffee plantation at the foot of a smoking volcano, already promised to the farm's foreman.
She wants the world on the other side of the mountain, a place she can barely picture. So she gets close to a young harvester who dreams of slipping across the border into the United States. He leaves without her. What follows is not escape but return — María rediscovers her own land, its rituals, and her mother's quiet authority. Non-professional leads María Mercedes Coroy and María Telón carry the film, speaking in Kaqchikel, a Mayan tongue rarely heard on screen.
The picture took the Alfred Bauer Prize at the Berlinale and became Guatemala's first-ever Oscar submission. Slow, almost documentary in texture, it rewards viewers who like ethnographic detail and tough, grounded women at the center. Stream Ixcanul (2015) online on iFILM.
