About
Synopsis
Sapphire (1959) is a British crime film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Basil Dearden, who took the BAFTA for Best British Film for this one. A young woman is found murdered in a London park — engaged, well-dressed, seemingly unremarkable — until detectives establish that she was of mixed race, quietly passing as white.
Scotland Yard's Hazard and Learoyd work through her circle: the white fiancé, his hostile parents, neighbors and acquaintances who all have a great deal more beneath their polite surfaces. Dearden doesn't editorialize. He just lets the interviews accumulate until the bigotry becomes the scenery. Stream Sapphire (1959) online on iFILM.
