Of Fathers and Sons

Of Fathers and Sons (2017) is a Syrian-German documentary available to watch online on iFILM. Director Talal Derki returned to war-torn Syria and spent over two years living inside the family of a radical jihadist known as Abu Osama.

The film centres on two brothers. Thirteen-year-old Osama is being groomed for the fight; twelve-year-old Ayman quietly wants to go back to school. Derki's camera is present for weapons drills, prayers and meals — the ordinary texture of a childhood being rerouted toward violence.
