Synopsis
Val (2021) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM, built almost entirely from footage Val Kilmer shot himself over four decades: 16mm home movies, rehearsal tapes, on-set recordings from Top Gun, The Doors, Tombstone, and Batman Forever. Directors Leo Scott and Ting Poo had thousands of hours to work with, and the result feels less like a career retrospective and more like a private journal left open.
After throat surgery in 2015 left Kilmer unable to speak clearly, his son Jack reads his words in voiceover. That detail reframes the whole film: the man who spent his career inhabiting other people's voices now has to borrow his own son's to tell his story. What emerges is a portrait of obsessive craft, a complicated reputation, deep Christian faith, and life in New Mexico far from Hollywood — with the illness treated not as tragedy but as context.
