Earthlings

Earthlings (2005) — watch online on iFILM — is a documentary directed by Shaun Monson and narrated by Joaquin Phoenix. Using hidden cameras and footage that had never reached mainstream audiences, the film moves through five industries that run entirely on animal use: food production, the clothing trade, entertainment, scientific research and sports.

Each chapter is structured as a separate investigation, presented without softening edits or reassuring commentary. Monson lets the footage carry the argument. The score by post-rock band Mogwai adds a cold, sustained pressure that runs under every scene.

This is not an easy watch. That's the point. Most environmental documentaries leave you informed; this one leaves you uncomfortable with your own habits — which is a harder thing to do and a rarer thing to find. Stream Earthlings (2005) online on iFILM.
