Synopsis
"A Monkey's Tale" (Le Château des singes, 1999) is a European animated film directed by Jean-François Laguionie, available to watch online on iFILM — a French-German-British-Hungarian co-production with a handcrafted visual style that stood apart from most family animation of its time.
Two monkey tribes have kept their distance for as long as anyone can remember. The Woonko live high in the canopy; the Laanko have settled on the ground, where they walk upright, wear clothes, and occasionally read. Young Kom has been told his whole life that the creatures below are dangerous. Then a branch snaps and he drops right into the middle of their world. The "civilized" monkeys turn out to be just monkeys with different habits — and the same fears underneath.
There is no real villain in this story, which is rare for children's films. Both sides are wrong about each other, and the film works through that honestly before it earns its resolution. Stream "A Monkey's Tale" (1999) on iFILM.
