Synopsis
Kirikou and the Wild Beasts (Kirikou et les bêtes sauvages, 2005) is a French animated anthology you can watch online on iFILM. César-winning director Michel Ocelot returns to the tiny West African hero he introduced in 1998, this time through five separate tales told by Kirikou's grandfather: the boy turns gardener, detective, potter, merchant, and long-distance traveler — and in each story manages to solve what the village elders could not.
Kirikou is still very small, very naked, and completely unrattled by whatever gets put in his path. He figures out who ransacked the garden, rides a giraffe across the savanna, and in the final episode talks his way through an encounter with Death itself. Ocelot's hand-drawn style — flat silhouettes, deep warm color, African percussion on the soundtrack — is immediately recognizable and visually unlike anything else in European animation.
It works as a children's film and also as a showcase for animation as actual craft. Stream Kirikou and the Wild Beasts (2005) online on iFILM.
