Synopsis
Marius and Jeannette (Marius et Jeannette, 1997) — watch online on iFILM Robert Guédiguian's love story set in the working-class L'Estaque quarter of Marseille, where Guédiguian has been filming for decades and every detail of his characters' lives rings true.
Jeannette is a single mother and supermarket cashier raising two kids on a thin income, sharp-tongued and done with disappointment. Marius guards an abandoned cement factory and doesn't have much left either. They meet when she tries to walk off with his paint cans. He shows up at her door the next morning with them. The neighbours — a tight-knit courtyard community — make it their business from the start.
Ariane Ascaride took home the César Award for Best Actress for this role, and earns it. Guédiguian doesn't sentimentalize poverty or make it picturesque — he shows it honestly and finds warmth inside it. Stream Marius and Jeannette (1997) online on iFILM.
