Synopsis
Bratislava, 1983. A new teacher walks into an ordinary classroom — an army officer's widow, a Party member, all warm smiles. The Teacher (Učiteľka, 2016) is a Slovak-Czech tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM, and that warmth turns out to come with a bill the parents are expected to pay.
On her first day Mrs. Drazdechová asks each child what their mother and father do for a living. The logic is brutally simple: families that can fix a car, pull strings or carry a suitcase abroad get better grades for their kids. When one student is pushed to the edge, the principal calls an emergency parents' meeting and lays a petition on the table — though in socialist Czechoslovakia, signing your name against a Party member feels riskier than staying quiet.
Director Jan Hřebejk stages it almost entirely between the meeting and the flashbacks, balancing comedy and quiet cruelty without ever tipping over.
