Synopsis
Van Gogh (1991) is Maurice Pialat's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The film follows the painter's final stretch: released from the asylum, Vincent moves to Auvers under the care of Doctor Gachet and keeps working while his mind quietly comes apart. Jacques Dutronc carries the lead.
Pialat throws out the tortured-genius legend. His Vincent eats, argues, flirts, drifts through cafés and dance halls, and paints the way other men clock in for a shift. Gachet's daughter Marguerite (Alexandra London) falls for the lodger, then grasps that his heart belongs to the canvas, not to her. Across nearly three hours, the camera lingers on ordinary life rather than the drama of death.
The performance landed Dutronc the César for Best Actor — a stubborn, unsentimental Vincent stripped of the usual martyr's halo. This one rewards patient viewers who want slow, tactile cinema with no hand-holding. Stream Van Gogh (1991) online on iFILM.
