Synopsis
Exhibiting Forgiveness (2024) is an American drama you can watch online on iFILM, the directing debut of painter Titus Kaphar and drawn straight from his own life.
Tarrell (André Holland) has built the life he wanted: gallery shows, recognition, a family of his own. He keeps the past at arm's length until his father (John Earl Jelks) turns up unannounced — a recovering addict, newly sober, desperate to make peace. Andra Day plays his wife, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor his mother. What surfaces is a knot of old injuries and one impossible question: can you forgive someone when you can't forget what they did?
Kaphar puts his own paintings on screen — Tarrell's canvases are literally his work — and the film keeps slipping into a gallery of grief and memory. It's intimate and heavy, refusing easy catharsis, about a Black family and the long reach of addiction. Holland and Jelks make the father-son fights almost unbearable to sit through.
