Petrus, a sailor cut off from his Red Army unit, rescues a young woman named Marusya from the bandit terror. Years pass and the country settles into peaceful life. The former sailor, now a Red commander, and Marusya, now a schoolteacher, cross paths by chance in a Moscow café — both drawn in by the old tune "Eh, Yablochko" that once played under gunfire.
