Synopsis
Two in the Shadow (1967) is Mikio Naruse's Japanese melodrama, available to watch online on iFILM. A young wife named Yumiko is happily married right up until the day a car kills her husband.
The driver, Mishima, is cleared of any fault — the crash was an accident — yet the guilt won't leave him. He sends the widow money; his company ships him off to a remote branch town. There their paths cross again, and a feeling neither will admit slowly grows between the woman who lost her husband and the man who killed him.
This was Naruse's final film, the last work of a director who spent half a century on hushed dramas about women and the happiness that slips away. Yōko Tsukasa and Yūzō Kayama lead; the storm stays buried in long pauses and held glances rather than tears. A delicate, melancholy piece for anyone who loves Japanese drama without histrionics.
