Synopsis
"New Gold Mountain" (2021) is an Australian period drama and mystery series you can watch online on iFILM. Set on the Bendigo goldfields in 1855, it follows Yoson An as the headman of the Chinese mining camp — caught between his own community and the colonial authorities surrounding it — after a murdered European woman is found with ties to his quarter.
Director Corrie Chen uses the western genre to tell a story Australia has rarely put on screen: what life in the goldfields actually looked like for the thousands of Chinese workers who helped dig them. The murder investigation is the frame; the real subject is the weight of being useful and unwelcome at the same time.
