Synopsis
George Carlin's American Dream (2022) is HBO's two-part documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, it traces the comic who spent fifty years saying out loud what everyone else kept quiet.
Carlin started as a clean-cut TV comedian in the 1960s and ended up the angriest, sharpest voice in American comedy — going after politics, religion and the lies baked into everyday language. The film moves through all of it: seven arrests over his "seven dirty words," the cocaine years, heart attacks, the death of his first wife Brenda. Friends fill in the rest — Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Bill Burr, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Bette Midler.
His daughter Kelly opened the family archive, so a lot of what's here never reached the stage specials. If you only know Carlin from the "stuff" bit, this lays out why his peers called him the Beatles of stand-up.
