Synopsis
The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner (2008) is Stephan Komandarev's Bulgarian drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. It's a warm, two-wheeled road movie about two generations, made as a co-production across five countries.
As a boy, Alex left socialist Bulgaria for Germany with his parents. Years later a car crash kills them both and leaves him with amnesia so deep he can't even place his own face. His grandfather Bai Dan travels up from Bulgaria — a joker and a master of backgammon. He puts the young man on a tandem bicycle and pedals the two of them across the country, back toward where they came from, rolling dice and dealing out games to rebuild his grandson piece by piece.
Adapted from Ilija Trojanow's novel, the film was Bulgaria's submission for the foreign-language Oscar. Serbian actor Miki Manojlović plays Bai Dan and holds the whole story together. Quiet, humane filmmaking for anyone who loves European dramas about memory and family. Stream The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner (2008) online on iFILM.
