Synopsis
The Marriage Escape (2020) is a Dutch tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. Jan has spent thirty-five years married to Gedda, and for all of them she has run his life — picking his clothes, his friends, the holidays, the way he spends a Sunday.
He can't take the smothering any longer, so he hatches an absurd scheme: fake the symptoms of dementia and slip out of his own loving marriage by the back door. Meanwhile their grown daughter is sliding into the same trap with a jealous, controlling boyfriend. Comedian Herman Finkers plays Jan deadpan, and that frozen face is where the humor lives. Director Johan Nijenhuis keeps one foot in farce and one in a sad truth about marriages where love has quietly curdled into control. Light on the surface, with a sting underneath.
