Synopsis
The King of the Cattle (O Rei do Gado, 1996) is a Brazilian Globo telenovela you can watch online on iFILM. Written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa across 209 episodes, it follows two rival dynasties — the Mezengas and the Berdinazzis — locked in a generation-spanning feud over cattle land in southern Brazil. Antônio Fagundes plays Bruno, heir to one of those dynasties and to everything that comes with the title: wealth, power, and an inherited grudge.
The story opens in the 1940s, when heirs of both families fall for each other — a feud straight out of Verona transplanted to the pastures of Mato Grosso. Fifty years on, nothing is settled. At the center of the new conflict is Luana (Patricia Pillar), a landless farmworker with no papers and no family name, whose appearance ignites another cycle of obsession between the clans.
The show aired at the height of Brazil's land reform debates in 1996–97 and didn't sidestep them: the landless workers here aren't backdrop, they are the argument. It remains one of the most-watched and most-debated series in Globo's history. Stream The King of the Cattle (1996) online on iFILM.
