"Adaptation" (2017) is a Russian comedy series you can stream online on iFILM, directed by Fyodor Stukov and Alexander Nazarov. An American intelligence officer is deployed to the Siberian city of Noyabrsk with one job: get hired at a major gas company under the Russian cover identity of an engineer named Oleg Menshov and extract classified research.

The language works. The backstory holds. What doesn't hold is any understanding of how the people around him actually function — how they argue, how they forgive, what they think is funny, what they treat as serious. A Cuban barber named Valera and a local woman named Marina start to feel like more than just background.
