Synopsis
The Golden Calf (2006) is a Russian comedy series you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from the Ilf and Petrov classic. Director Ulyana Shilkina cast Oleg Menshikov as Ostap Bender, working a long con on a secret underground millionaire named Koreiko in 1920s Soviet Russia.
Koreiko has quietly built a fortune he can never spend or acknowledge — the system would crush him the moment anyone found out. Bender knows it and sets about assembling an airtight file, squeezing money out of his mark one elaborate scheme at a time. His companions: Panikovsky with his perpetual goose and the chronically unlucky Balaganov. Dmitry Nazarov, Nikita Tatarenko, and Leonid Okunev round out the cast.
Menshikov plays Bender not as a fast-talking trickster but as a man who finds everything too effortless to feel anything — and that reading gives the familiar material a melancholy edge absent from earlier screen versions.
