Down

Down (2001) is a Dutch-American horror thriller directed by Dick Maas — watch it online on iFILM. A 102-floor Manhattan skyscraper has a problem: its elevators have stopped merely malfunctioning and started killing people. Mechanic Mark Newman (James Marshall) and journalist Jennifer Evans (Naomi Watts) dig into the incidents from separate angles, and the terrorism theory the police are running with turns out to be far too straightforward.

The body count climbs. The manufacturer stonewalls. Ron Perlman, Michael Ironside and Edward Herrmann round out a cast that keeps things grounded even as the explanation gets increasingly strange. The film earns its tagline — "Your next stop is hell" — with a straight face and real commitment to the premise.
